If you’re thinking of paving your driveway or require commercial paving services, you likely have a few questions regarding the process. The following are the most frequently asked questions customers have and the answers will hopefully provide you with a clarification:

How does paving work?

It is a process consisting of the placement of either solid stretches of asphalt or concrete bricks to make a road or driveway. A base supports every stretch of the asphalt and this is normally made of compacted gravel, which not only supports the asphalt but helps keep water from pooling as well. Only after the base is laid will hot asphalt be poured on top and rolled over by a power roller so that it becomes compact and strong. In the final step, the asphalt will be cooled with water.

Why is it important?

Paving is important for a number of reasons, including the fact that it is an effective way of maintaining a clear path in snowy conditions. Other types of driveways, like gravel, for example, are hard to clean and snow and ice cannot be removed as easily as asphalt. A clear path will provide you with peace of mind and both foot and car traffic can flow easily without the risk of danger. Asphalt is easy to install and cost-effective, so it will not cost you a fortune and if you take care of it properly, it will last you a very long time.

Can paving be completed during the winter season?

Professional paving companies can do it during any season, including winter. The rolling aspect may be challenging because the asphalt needs to be hot and if the ground is frozen, the asphalt may cool faster but experienced pavers will know how to get the job done regardless of the cold temperatures.

What are paving slabs and stones made of?

This will depend on the kind of paving stone you have, although they are generally made of concrete. It is common for other materials to be added to the concrete to change the colour or to support it at different temperatures.

Should I seal paving stones?

It is recommended that you go through with this step because concrete can be a porous material and when water enters these pores, it will cause them to expand and contract as the temperatures change. This will cause the water to swell and may result in damage. Sealing your new pavement about six to 12 months after it has been installed can prevent this from happening and this time frame is recommended because it will allow your pavement time to settle.
