Pavement can withstand thousands of pounds of weight because it is a very durable material, but it does have its vulnerabilities, and temperature changes can affect its condition. Extreme temperature differences will impact paved highways, roads, parking lots and walkways, and pavement will react to different weather conditions over time.

Hot temperatures will cause pavement to expand, and this can eventually cause it to crack. Exposure to hot temperatures can be problematic because cracks can become bigger over time and this can lead to a number of headaches. Pavement cracks would allow water to seep inside and can erode the subsurface layers. Air gaps can form as a result, and if weight is applied to the top layer, the asphalt will sag, and a depression or divot will appear. A passing vehicle would count as weight being applied, and depending on the severity of the situation, potholes can form.

Winter can bring its own share of problems because when temperatures fluctuate above and below freezing levels, the pavement will react. Even if there is no precipitation on the ground, it can be present underneath. Snow, rain, sleet and hail can all seep into the cracked areas of asphalt, and if the temperature warms up on certain days, this will result in water. Then, when the temperature drops again, this water may freeze and expand and will push the crack outward. This freeze-thaw process can be problematic because it can widen the existing cracks and can lead to more serious damage like potholes, which could be very dangerous.

Rain, too, can cause pavement to react because it can be problematic during the winter and also when the area of pavement is on a significant slope. A steep incline means the rain will constantly be washing down the liquid asphalt, and this can eventually erode away the top layer of the material. Liquid asphalt is the material that is used to bond the aggregates that form asphalt, and over time, the paved area can wear away, resulting in a completely different appearance consisting mainly of rock and aggregate.

It’s important to pay attention to your pavement both in the summer and winter because temperature extremes will cause your pavement to react, so you need to monitor this aspect as temperature swings will force your pavement to expand and contract, which can cause cracks. These cracks may appear small but if they are not repaired, they can expand quickly, and your surface may become warped or uneven as a result. This is a safety issue that can affect both drivers and pedestrians, so it is a problem that needs to be addressed right away.
